The View episode on Women and Depression
An episode of The View [ABC tv] in 2010 featured a number of guests talking about the personal experience of depression [including dysthymia, and bipolar] and the variety of treatments available.
The program resource page on depression quotes the National Institute of Mental Health: “In any given 1-year period, 9.5 percent of the population, or about 20.9 million American adults, suffer from a depressive illness. Serious depression can destroy family life as well as the life of the ill person.
“But much of this suffering is unnecessary. Most people with a depressive illness do not seek treatment, although the great majority even those whose depression is extremely severe can be helped.”
Host Rosie O’Donnell said she uses inversion therapy [photo] for up to a half hour a day to help deal with her depression, and has also used antidepressants, which “saved her life,” she said.
Guests included Sarah H. Lisanby, MD, author of Brain Stimulation in Psychiatric Treatment; Lauren Slater, PhD, author of Prozac Diary, and Hyla Cass, MD, author of Natural Highs: Supplements, Nutrition, and Mind-Body Techniques to Help You Feel Good All the Time.
Cass affirmed that one of the potent herbal treatments for depression is St. John’s Wort.

Linda Dano [right] was diagnosed with depression following the deaths of her husband and mother. “Now, the Emmy-winning actress works on recovery with the help of her doctor and her Support Partner. She wants others to know about the support network she finds so helpful in her recovery from depression.” See Support Partner Program.
“As someone who is usually upbeat and enthusiastic about life, recent traumatic events thrust me into a battle with depression that left me sad and very much alone. I wasn’t sure where to turn. I felt myself turning into someone I didn’t recognize,” says Linda. “I lost the joy in things I had been doing all my life… I was tired all the time, I had trouble sleeping and even had mysterious pains in my back.”
“People should know that there is a way you can help someone with depression,” says Linda, “and people with depression need to know that your friends and family want to support you, so you can get back to feeling like yourself.”
